Jonah had, after much giant-fish intervention, gone to Ninevah to tell the people that God was going to destroy the city for their evil ways. The people paid attention. God changed his mind. Jonah got angry with God for being so ....gracious. I don't understand the ways of God 24/7. I do have my questions about what God is doing or not doing with the world right now. But even in my angriest or poutiest moments, I find myself, like Jonah, sitting in the shade of bush that God commanded to be my shade. I hear myself saying in exasperation...."God, do you HAVE to be SO gracious?" And I answer my own question. Considering who God is talking to, yes, God does have to be so gracious. And that is a really, really good thing.

Holy God, be slow to anger and I will try not to be quite so surprised when you love us. Amen.
