The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.” Nicodemus said to him, “How can these things be?”

There have been times in my life when I have been intensely aware of the presence of the Spirit. So strong and so incredibly vibrant it was that I felt like holding my breath lest it leave as if it were a timid wild animal I has suddenly happened upon in the forest. But it wasn't because of anything I did or didn't do, as if I could do anything to conjure its presence. There have been times when I wish I could conjure it because of the passages of cold, emptiness that we all walk through from time to time. I don't always know how the Spirit works, how it travels, how it seems to me so close or far away. What I do believe is the Spirit has a mind of its own and that it is as aware of me whether or not I feel it. How I know that is both a great mystery and a great comfort.

Spirit of the Living God, breathe in me. Amen.
