The righteous flourish like the palm tree, and grow like a cedar in Lebanon. They are planted in the house of the Lord; they flourish in the courts of our God. In old age they still produce fruit; they are always green and full of sap, showing that the Lord is upright.

When I was young adult, I picked my friends, the college I wanted to attend, the authors and mentors I wanted to help me shaped my adulthood. Facing the older years, I look to the lives of older folks for the role models to help me shape my choices, God willing, in the years ahead. The ones who get my attention are the ones still offering their gifts, who are "always green and full of sap." They are the ones who readily acknowledge that they are not the source of life but the conduit for it. No matter our age, we can all still be an irrigation system for the life giving love of God.

Lord God, I would rather be a waterpipe than an empty pot. Amen.
